But, I have only seen a couple of cockroaches…. The problem is not that bad. Repeatedly this is what customers initially say about seeing a couple of roaches in the kitchen. It does not take long before they realize that this appraisal is very wrong. Almost, it seems, overnight one sighted cockroach becomes hundreds. Then they call almost in a panic. (For the rest of the article the term roaches will refer to cockroaches)
Do not let this happen to you! Even seeing a single roach should be cause for concern and a call to action.
When a roach lays an egg, it is a capsule consisting of up to 42 little roaches (nymphs) per capsule! As you will soon read, a very simple problem escalates into a major, major problem.
There are approximately 4,000 species of roaches. Of those about 70 live in the U.S. Here in the Eugene area two roaches are the biggest problem. One is the American Cockroach (Periplaneta americana) which is ½ inch long, and the German Cockroach (Blattella germanica) which is ¼ inch long. Unfortunately, it is quite common to find both species living in the same dwelling. Of the two the German roach is by far the most difficult to eradicate. By the way, in Germany this roach is called the French Cockroach, and in France it is called the German Cockroach.
If you have been around roaches, you know they are nocturnal and most active at night. When you approach an infested area and turn on a light, they scatter in every direction. With a flash, they vanish seemingly into nowhere. As it turns out roaches have a burst speed of 200 miles per hour, they cannot sustain that speed, but in a blink of the eye, they are gone! Once considered the light that made them scatter but the two small appendages at the rear of the roach are very sensitive to air movement. Therefore, it is actually the motion of the hand reaching for the light switch that causes the instant burst of speed

To begin with, roaches need a favorable place to live. They need shelter, food, and water. Therefore, your kitchen and bathroom will do very nicely to fill all those requirements. There they will live very comfortably and reproduce in mass. That is why in the kitchen it is especially important to remove all cardboard boxes, containers stacked on top of the refrigerator, paper and plastic bags you keep stuffed alongside it. While it may be a convenient place for you to store these items, it is also the perfect place for them to nest. Roaches love these areas. They will lay their eggs in the corrugated layer of a cardboard box, and in the mass of plastic or paper bags, here they are well protected and kept warm until they hatch.
Make no mistake; roaches can present some serious health problems. They can and do contaminate food, dishes, and food preparation areas as well as appliances. They do carry human pathogens, such as Salmonella and E. coli, which can result in human diseases, such as food poisoning or diarrhea. They are a major contributor causing allergies and asthma to flare up in adults and children. Think about it, one moment they are on the bathroom toilet, the next they are taking a sip of your morning coffee while you surf the web on your computer. Yes, it is gross, but it actually happens.
The appearance of a roach: its body appears flattened and oval-shaped with long antennae when looking at a roach from the top down you will notice that its head is not visible from this angled view. They also have six strong legs covered with sticky spines, which makes it easy for them to climb vertical surfaces. No place in your house is safe from their invasion.
Adults have fully developed wings, and in high concentrations can and do fly when their numbers become excessive. For the most part, they just crawl.

Roaches have a life cycle consisting of three distinct stages: egg, nymph, and adult. Adults lay eggs and as mentioned earlier, each egg capsule can contain up to 42 baby roaches (nymphs). The eggs can be a light brown to a dark brown in color and they are roughly the same size and shape as a dry Kidney Bean.
It is important to know that they will even infest electronics, computers, televisions, and microwaves. They love coffee pots and their morning coffee. Check items such as these as a possible nesting source. Placing sticky traps around appliances, and other areas will give you a good indication concerning their activity level.
It is interesting to note that the German roach has developed a very elaborate social structure. This involves a common shelter, indications of a social dependence, share information and recognize their offspring and family.
Once you have the American or German Cockroaches you need to know that they do not forage for food outside. They will follow the plumbing or electrical lines to move from one area of your house to another. If you live in an apartment, they will travel from your neighbor’s kitchen or bathroom to your apartment in the same manner, using the plumbing and electrical lines.
The female American Cockroach can live approximately 700 days and the males about 360 days. During her lifespan, she can produce more than 250 offspring and that from just one roach. Imagine an infestation of several thousand although I am sure you would rather not imagine that. Once the egg is laid, it will hatch in about 45 days depending on the temperature and humidity.
The German cockroach egg capsule has about 40 nymphs in each one and they will hatch in less than 30 days. It has a lifespan (both males and females) of about 200 days. During her lifespan, one female German Cockroach will produce more than 200 offspring.

Now, how did you get the roaches to begin with? That used furniture or appliances you brought in possibly came with some unwelcome guests. Luggage from your last trip, dry cleaned clothes (yes roaches move from the dirty clothes into the clean) you just brought home. Moving boxes, or boxes from your local grocer, are possible sources for an infestation. Even a diaper bag or handbag from a visiting friend can bring roaches into your home, and the list goes on.
So you have roaches, Now what?
